Based in Maine but teaching internationally.
Tracking the Gallop pattern using a domestic dog.
Michael Douglas M.Sc. explores the gallop using a domestic dog as an illustration. Because in the mesmerizing realm of tracking, the domestic dog emerges as a beacon of agility and instinctual prowess, exemplifying the artistry of the gallop through its tracks. Each stride etches a story in the earth, with front paws landing first, followed seamlessly by the hind, propelling the dog forward in a rhythmic dance of motion. As we trace the imprints left behind, analyzing the depth, spacing, and direction, we unveil a narrative of speed, purpose, and vitality. Guided by the keen senses of our canine companions, we embark on a journey of interpretation, decoding the language of tracks to uncover the secrets of the gallop, forging an unbreakable bond with nature's intricate rhythms along the way. #dogtrack #tracker #gallop #survival #primitiveskills #hunter #nature #snow #maine #survivalschool

I wish we still had Ash. I hate to cut the white oak.
zygodactal ,,, fancy words.. beautiful stories written on the land..
I'm not trying to be the "tracking police" here, but most animal locomotion folks would call this movement "bounding." Bounding generally refers to the synchronized use of the hind feet (as you mentioned in the video). In contrast, a galloping gait involves each hind foot landing at different times (think "4-beats" instead of 3). Hope that's helpful!

My most profound memories are a fire food friends near, cooking on flame is a pure experience. To be cold but have that beautiful comfort. Nothing better than a camping memory.
great job on this video
Awesome ! 🙏
Red-winged Blackbird is my favorite bird. I remember it from my childhood. Thanks for sharing...
Be like Tom Bombadil.
lol!
Crows...all over Ireland. My family crest has 3 crows in it....
They are a welcome call, for sure. I very much enjoy paddling through my local marsh with them calling, the water is usually higher which allows access into parts of the marsh that are otherwise impassable by foot or boat, I can take short cuts across the meandering meadow brook with a crotched Y pole, Osprey nest lodged in the dead hackmatack trees, goose honking, the occasional duck flits off pushed from a nest possibly.

Ваши знания и умения очень важны для Человечества, но об этом мало кто знает.
Just seeing in 2024 this video for the first time , I love the net making and information on different synthetics and fibres used and why the different amount of knots , that’s something I know now to consider when making nets , the man’s hand size for his net makes sense as well , your a very common sense guy ,love it.👍

Great fun!
Interesting. Not much snow here in SC, but I'm sure we could track paw prints on soggy wet days and then assess the coyote numbers here. Even in busy suburbs reports are flying in about coyotes moving in even into backyards. Apparently they're more resilient to development than most mammal species. Ditto for the wild hogs causing native woodland destruction here.
Years ago, my younger brother got us all reading a book by Tom Brown called "The Tracker"; then I read a series of books by Tom Brown. After reading The Tracker we all wanted to go out and track, but I was terrible at it. I read 5 or 6 of them. One was called "Grandfather" an Apache medicine man/tracker. This video reminds me of things I read in that series of books.
Thank you! I grew up in fork River, New Jersey, and Tom was a major influence on my life. It is an honor to be compared to the most influential mentor in my formative years.
@@primitiveskills I read Tom's books and am from Medford, Nj. I spent years back then tracking in the Pine Barrons. He taught me everything, especially what animals can teach.
No legacy videos
Sending you great energy as we enter the spring of this year.
Ticks are really bad in New York this year. My dog is very sick with all three kinds of Lyme disease. But that just gave her 28 days of antibiotics which she did make it through... But it seems to be coming back
Japanese knotweed, according to Beuhner and the research, transports modern antibiotics through the blood/tissue barriers to the synovial fluid where the cork-screw spirochete prefers to exist. Apparently, the resveratrol and accompanying phyto-chemicals also breech the protective cyst like covering of the bacteria and dismantle the organelles within the bacterial spirochete. We have had a number of community members administer knotweed tincture to their dogs to good effect.

So fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! Have you been out to the school?
@@primitiveskills No. But, oh, how I wish.
Right on, neighbor.
Wow, it seems we are close! Great video of the bald eagles at togus!
I like that use discussed ways to eat it AND for cordage.
Thank you Cynthia! We work to build meaningful connection with each plant through fieldcraft and awareness in a combo we refer to as "Nature Literacy". Have you been to the campus before?
No. Where is it?

The ability to live off grid and comfortable enough to harvest local tree bark and process it into clothing is almost a bi-product of reclaiming the skills of our great grandparents. The challenge of hands on mastery of life sustaining skills creates a sense of accomplishment and has measurable application in our daily life. It's quite alluring.
😊
Thank you Harriet!

Yes. All sizes. Lots of colours. Other more specific primitive skills designs. The bandanas are so versatile. Do let us know what you think.
Rabbits/hares do not "gallop". A gallop is a 4 beat movement where as a rabbit hop is 3: front, front, hinds simultaneously.
I like your interpretation based on the timing of footfalls rather than the mechanics of a body scissor, placing front feet behind rear feet, indicating a speed variation in most species aside from lagomorphs. I’m going to have to cipher what the difference is with regard to changing and maintaining speed variations, in my approach to tracking track clusters, and their distance between each other in a gallop pattern was a universal measurement, regardless of species as long as they maintained that gallop pattern what you’re saying is taking to en the timing of impact of both feet side by side indicates different information than gallop patterns in general? If so, what information would that impart aside from the timing of footfalls both left and right? with much respect, Mike.
I ran some rope through the outer lip to make a pull rop for our sled. It helps sometimes
Yes! Also makes a great way to "brake" or slow a runnaway sled!
I love you
Well, I suppose I love you too, but just be aware, I'm Mike, the fifty five year old Director of the school and I haven't shaved my beard smooth since the Marines way back in 1989. :)
this is one of the best introductions to bird language I've ever seen, kichi wliwni wji yo
Excellent video, and an epic ending ❤ I so enjoy the campfire videos. And hopefully, I’m waiting and looking forward to seeing more of them in the near future 😇
Glad you enjoyed it! I'll be starting them up again soon! Thank you for the encouragement!
Does the plant die after the 2nd year after going to seed? ... I was wondering if the roots are still edible🤔 thanks for all you're doing, this is the Lost knowledge we need 🙌
These biannual roots are best in the first year or the second in the early Spring before they bolt.
